10/22/18

October 21, 2018 - Grade 9 (PM Sunday)

Hari Om!

This past week we had a shortened class due to Saraswathi Pooja, but before that, we discussed the different kinds of karma.

Last week, since we talked about the karma kanda in the Vedas, we continued the discussion this week with what karma means and the different karma.

The activities, or karma, of the world are categorized four ways:
  • Nisiddha karma - any actions that are condemned by the scriptures (e.g. Suraam na pibet - do not have alcohol)
  • Kaamya karma - actions prompted by personal desires, keeping Dharma in mind (e.g. Putresti yajna - a yajna performed to have children)
  • Nitya karma - daily duties that every individual must perform (e.g. as a student, your nitya karma is studying)
  • Naimittika karma - special duties performed on special occasions (e.g. acknowledging a birthday)
We then discussed three more types of karma that are based on punya and papa, merits and demerits earned from good and bad actions respectively.
  • Sancita karma - the store of punya and papa that an individual collects over past lives and the current life. This store stands still awaiting its fruition
  • Prarabdha karma - the karma that comes to fruition at the time of the individual taking birth. This prarabdha determines the form of the body of the individual and the type of environment that the individual is born in
  • Agami karma - the good or bad actions taken by a Self-Realized individual, and these actions do not affect the individual anymore
At the end of class, we chanted Bhagavad Gita verses 41-46, and performed Saraswathi pooja with the rest of the session.
