Apr 26, 2019 - Grade 9 (Friday)

Hari Om! Parents,

We started our class with the beginning prayers followed by learning to chant,
Bhadram Karne bhih…

This week our curriculum was on focusing on our eating habits
We are what we eat, living beings are born out of food and nourished by food. Food is a very important aspect in our life.
Offering of the food to Lord first and then taken as prasadam. Thanking the lord for the food reinforces the attitude of gratitude in us.
The words we say have an effect on the food and water we consume, hence we offer a prayer to the Lord before eating.
Our body is made up off 75 percent water. So we should treat water gently and with respect
We talked about the results of a Japanese scientist Dr. Emoto. He conducted an experiment with water subjected to good word and bad words. He did a similar experiment with cooked rice.
The  water  was exposed to good words and frozen. When examined under a microscope had a beautiful structure and and the other other one did not have.
The rice particles exposed to beautiful words remained fresh after a month while the other one turned rotten
Discussed being thankful and offering prayers before eating will nourish our body.
Talked about the types of food we should eat:
Foods which increase life, strength, health, are dear to the satvika person. A satvika person chooses food which are wholesome and nourishing
Foods which are bitter, sour, salty, hot and pungent are generally chosen by the rajasic peron.. Such a food generally leads a person to disease and pain
Foods which are stale, putrid are generally chosen by the tamasic person.
Our aim is to cultivate a taste for satvika food, as it helps to be energetic and cheerful and helps us to reach our goal and practice spiritual disciplines easily.
Discussed this with a analogy. Example was, a car filled with premium oil functions very efficiently and has a longer life.
Taught that children should help making one meal per week so that they become skilful in this task. They can find exciting recipes on the web.
We talked about the Annaprasna ceremony, when a baby is fed solid food for the first time. Rice is cooked and mixed with ghee and honey is offered to the lord and then fed to the baby.
Showed a video from Upanishad Ganga about the life of the boy named Satyakama, from the Chandogya Upanishad. The episode describe the life of a student.
Satyakama, sees the Lord in everything around him from a very young age and has an intense quest for knowledge.
Discussed when you have this quest for any kind of knowledge, material or spiritual, the guru is said to come to you, which is what happened to Satyakama.
Our next BV class is on My 3rd.
