Sep 14, 2018 Grade 10-12 (Friday)

Hari Om! Parents,

Welcome to the Friday Grade 10-12 JCHYK class.

Curriculum
This year we will be covering the following:

  • Review of Mahabharata until the start of the war, retelling the main incidents, discussing the cause, effect and lessons learned in each story
  • Introduction to Bhagavad Gita
  • BG Chapter 1:  Arjuna's Grief
  • BG Chapters 2-5:  Karma Yoga
  • BG Chapter 6: Meditation
  • Learning to chant:  Gita Dhyana Shloka, Aditya Hridayam, BG 18: Verses 41-78

Activities planned
We are planning many hands-on activities to break-up the discussions.  Going along with the theme of Karma Yoga, we will be doing 2 types of seva projects this year during Balavihar class time.

  1. Co-teaching a younger class - 3 times a year
    1. The dates for this assignment will be announced shortly
    2. The grade assigned and lesson plan for the class will be provided 2 weeks in advance
    3. Meeting with the teacher will be completed one week ahead and enough time will be given to prepare

  1. In class projects – duration of 1.5 hours – 4 times a year
    1. Ashram support through flyer design, house spirit day, etc.
    2. Children are also welcome to suggest a project for the group to complete for a local charity

In addition, the CHYK teachers in our Balavihar program are organizing team bonding activities such as apple picking, Garba, etc.  Look out for details as we get closer to the events.

We are aware of the competing priorities on these high schoolers time, so we have asked them to come to class whenever they can and as often as they feel comfortable.  This will be a stress free environment, and in fact the learnings from the Gita could be a stress relief opportunity for them.  Every class will be conducted in a discussion based format and will allow participation even if children have missed the previous class.  All questions are welcome so long as the intention is to understand scriptural teachings, and elevate our ability to logically think about how it makes sense and how to apply it in our lives.  In that journey, we all walk together.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us anytime via email, or meet us before or after class.  We will not be inundating your inbox with weekly emails, there is better use of all our time.  We will communicate with you only regarding important events and activities and would appreciate a prompt response when requested.

Look forward to a productive year of learning.

Aruna and Jayant
